Volunteers ensure that residents experience peace, dignity, and compassion in their final days.
Your presence helps create a comforting environment where residents feel valued and loved. Whether offering companionship, preparing meals, greeting visitors, gardening, or assisting with events, your efforts bring warmth and joy to the home.
You help lighten the burden for families, allowing them to be present with their loved ones. Your kindness creates moments of connection and comfort that families will cherish long after they leave.

Volunteer Positions
First impressions are important. Be the smiling face a visitor sees when they ring the doorbell at Pappus House. Be the calm voice that directs inquiries when they call our phone. This role is one of the most crucial to ensuring the warm, loving atmosphere of our home.
2 hr Shifts: Daily 9am – 11am; 11am – 1pm; 1pm – 3pm; 3pm – 5pm; 5pm – 7pm

Direct Care volunteers work side-by-side with our Care Staff, providing comfort and support to our residents and their families. This is a perfect opportunity for volunteers, especially healthcare professionals, looking to make a difference with direct care of our residents. Please note: this volunteer opportunity requires additional upfront and annual training, as well as bigger monthly time commitment.
4 hr Shifts: Daily 9am – 1pm; 1pm – 5pm; 5pm – 9pm

Social Activity volunteers provide social interaction with residents and possibly family members in the form of conversation, sitting with residents at meal time, playing cards or board games, reading aloud, doing crafts, and engaging in other activities. Sharing your musical talents by singing or playing an instrument, whether a “concert” or “sing-along.” Writing letters… and just listening or sitting quietly as needed. If any of this interaction is something that you enjoy, we’d love to have you.
1 hr Shifts: Daily 10am – 11am; 11am – 12pm; 12pm – 1pm; 1pm – 2pm; 2pm – 3pm; 3pm – 4pm

Help with the daily work of keeping our house operational. Light housekeeping, laundry and help with meal preparation keep our house a warm loving home.
2 hr Shifts: Daily 9am – 11am; 11am – 1pm; 1pm – 3pm; 3pm – 5pm

Cook on-site “Family Meals” for residents and their families and staff on one of several prearranged dates and times per month.
2 hr Shifts: offered several times a month

Help keep our grounds beautiful. Participate in “Weeding Wednesdays,” gardening, mowing, watering (inside and out).
Seasonal

Some residents, in their final hours, may not have family or otherwise prefer that another person sit with them quietly in their room to help them pass peacefully. Due to its nature, this very important need may arise with little advance notice.
Shifts: On-Call As Needed

Holiday Decoration – We want our residents to continue to enjoy the little things in life they have celebrated over their lifetimes. We welcome groups to help us tastefully decorate our home.
Seasonal

Behind-the-scenes help is what keeps us ticking, from committees, mailings, public speaking, and fundraising. We appreciate every bit of support that is offered.

If you enjoy developing and coordinating programs, this might be for you. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of Pappus House and it is a priority for us to recruit volunteers, engage them in educational opportunities, and also find a way to show our appreciation. If you enjoy writing and informing volunteers of what’s happening at Pappus House, our monthly “Volunteer Spotlight” or “Pappus House Newsletter” might be a perfect fit.

How do I apply?
Pappus House Volunteer Requirements
To maintain the Mission and Vision of Pappus House, volunteers will be expected to:
- Sign a Confidentiality Agreement
- Sign a Waiver of Liability
- Fill out a Volunteer Application
- Consent to have a background check performed (PATCH from PA State Police)
- Volunteer a minimum of 2 times a month
